Grid List From OpenSimulator. This week I am looking at another virtual world called 3rd Rock grid. It is a much smaller world with a lot less members compared to Second Life. This initially appeared to be very similar to Second Life, although it took a long time for my avatar to load.

The view was the same, as I saw everything from behind my avatar. Both worlds had the ability to fly which I always find to be a cool benefit of being involved in a virtual world. Second Life is a much larger space, with a lot more members who are constantly building new spaces.

The search capabilities on 3rd Rock were no comparison to Second Life. SL has everything from zoos, cafes, bars etc. But I struggled to find any places like this in 3rd Rock.

The only places I was able to teleport to was by randomly clicking on the map and seeing where it took me. Once again 3rd Rock seemed to have limited options compared to Second Life. The times I was in the world, by avatars clothes never loaded properly and my physical appearance had no where near the detail to my SL avatar. This is a good feature for any newbies in the world!

I did not encounter any other people during my experiences in 3rd rock, which once again I think was because of the smaller number of members.

I feel like the socialization and conversations would be fairly similar to Second Life- everyone has an avatar and the ability to communicate by typing in the message box.

3rd rock grid

Both worlds prove to allow people to build amazing places and objects. I am always amazed at the creativity and detail people put into what they build.

Although, I still think Second Life offers more creations and destinations- i think this is because of the much larger population compared to 3rd Rock.

It was interesting getting another perspective on virtual worlds, a the only social virtual world I have used previously was Second Life. I was surprised how much the two worlds overlapped in terms of the basic building, avatars, and navigation.

Overall, I would say I prefer Second Life in terms of the interface and the amount of options in terms of destinations and avatar customization.
